Fishermen’s Knits from the Coast of Norway
Authors: Line Iversen & Margareth Sandvik
Three hundred years ago, Norwegian fishermen went to sea no matter the wind or weather—and they needed warm, comfortable, durable sweaters to protect them from the cold while they worked. Now, photographs and documentation of surviving examples have been brought together to form the foundation for this collection: timeless traditional patterning applied to modern styling and shaping, for a selection of sweaters, cardigans, hats, mittens, vests, and more, for men and women, rooted deeply in the rich tapestry of Norwegian history.
- Learn the stories behind traditional handmade knitwear: who made it, the lives they lived, and where and how it was used
- Explore techniques including stripes, blocks, lice, ribbing, cabling, and more
- Adapt reimagined designs to your own style—pullover or cardigan, buttons or zipper, scoop neck or boat neck, in any combination
Line Iversen was born in 1976 in Trondheim, and now lives in Ålesund. She is a historian and museum curator who specializes in women’s history, everyday history, and textiles; she has written several articles for Norwegian publications based on the textile collections at Sunnmøre Museum.
Margareth Sandvik is a professor of Norwegian at OsloMet (the Metropolitan University of Oslo). She designs colorful traditional knitwear, and contributed patterns to the book Squares, Stripes, and Lice, from Trafalgar Square Books.

Very warm and comfortable, but the sizing runs a bit small. I would suggest ordering a size up. Otherwise, it’s a great product.
Sarah Miller –
The knits are beautifully made, but I found them a bit itchy. Maybe they need to soften over time. Still, a quality product.
Michael Davis –
Excellent for outdoor activities, especially in windy and wet conditions. The wool keeps you warm even when it’s damp.
Emma Wilson –
